Why Buy Used vs Certified Pre-Owned?

When you're shopping for your next vehicle, the options might seem endless. Model years, trim levels, extras, financing options, buying new or used-these are all things you'll need to consider. Used cars make a lot of sense for people shopping on a budget. Even if you know you'd like to buy something used, you'll still need to choose between regular used or certified pre-owned (CPO). Both have their advantages, so here's how they compare.

To earn the CPO label, a vehicle has to meet several standards set forth by the car manufacturer. For one, it needs to be new enough. It also needs to fall under a maximum mileage requirement. And, to be CPO, it needs to have a clean vehicle history report.

If each of these three things are in place, then the dealership goes through a multi-point inspection list that looks at 100-200 specific things about the car. If anything is subpar to the manufacturer's standards, it will be replaced.

Thanks to these requirements, buying CPO for most people means buying a used car that's guaranteed to last. Most CPO programs stand by their guarantee by offering extended warranties, roadside assistance or maintenance deals, as well.

The one thing that a regular old used car has that a CPO car does not is a smaller price tag. For many people, the extra cost-often $1,000 or more-is worth it. It makes buying used a little less scary. However, what some people don't realize is that there are ways to take some of the guessing out of buying a used car.

For instance, you can get the same type of vehicle history report that the CPO program uses on any used car via services like Carfax or AutoCheck. Plus, in many cases you will continue to save money as your insurance will be lower as a result of your car being cheaper.

Check a resource like Kelley Blue Book to learn the normal market-price for each make, model, year and condition to make sure you being charged fairly. In the end, as long as you do your research ahead of time, buying used can be just as reliable and at a notably lower cost than CPO.
